Advent Ember Days: A Heightened Time of Expectation and Waiting in Preparation for Christmas

Bishop Alfred Schlert encourages the clergy and faithful of the Diocese to celebrate the Ember Days for the Season of Advent.

Ember Days are a longstanding tradition in the Church, with three days set aside each quarter to pray in gratitude for the blessings of the season and human labor, and to thank God publicly.

In particular, the Advent Ember Days are a heightened time of expectation and waiting in preparation for Christmas.

Ember Days for Advent are Wednesday, Dec. 14; Friday, Dec. 16; and Saturday, Dec. 17.

Ember Days are observed with fasting and abstinence. Fasting means one full meal a day, along with two smaller meals that do not equal the main meal, and no snacking between meals. Abstinence means not eating meat.
