A diocesan sacred music concert to benefit war victims in Ukraine, featuring a cello recital and performances of two new pieces of music written by diocesan choir directors, will be held March 27 at the Cathedral of St. Catharine of Siena.
The event will begin at 3 p.m. with the Divine Mercy prayers, offered for peace in Ukraine, followed by the recital and concert at 3:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served afterward.
Bishop Alfred Schlert will attend, and will provide a brief reflection and comments during the event.
The cello artist will be Richard Maurer, a Julliard-trained cellist and member of the Cathedral parish. He will perform solo cello works by Gabrielli, Bach, and more, and will provide commentary on each piece.
Also at the recital, the Cathedral Angelorum Choir will sing a Marian prayer beloved by Ukrainians, set to a melody and harmonies composed by Beverly McDevitt, Cathedral Choir Director. The prayer is similar to the Memorare Prayer.
In addition, there will be a performance of Ave Maria, written by Patrick Oswald, composer and music director of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Whitehall. The Cathedral Angelorum Choir will debut this new piece written for choir with cello and keyboard accompaniment.
The concert is free, and proceeds from a free-will offering will be donated to humanitarian aid efforts in Ukraine.
