Dr. Carl McBreen Named Principal of Assumption BVM School

Assumption BVM School, Pottsville has named Dr. Carl McBreen as its new Principal. McBreen will assume the role for the 2026-27 school year, bringing 34 years in education to the position, including more than a decade as superintendent of the Minersville Area School District. McBreen succeeds Mrs. Carol Boyer, who is moving into a newly created role as President of Catholicity and Mission.

A lifelong educator, McBreen began his career teaching third, fourth, and sixth grade before moving into administration. He served as a school administrator and later as principal of Minersville Area Junior/Senior High School and went on to lead the Minersville Area School District as superintendent from 2013 until his retirement in 2024.

McBreen holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.) from Widener University, a Master of Education from Kutztown University, and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, also from Kutztown. A product of Catholic education himself, he attended St. Stephen School, Port Carbon.

"I decided, after two years of retirement, that I missed education. I wanted to find a good fit, and Assumption really intrigued me. I am happy to be a part of Assumption BVM, where I can deeply integrate my Catholic faith into my work every day," McBreen said.

Looking ahead to his first year, McBreen said his priority is to provide "a faith-filled learning environment for every student who passes through the doors of our school."

A Minersville resident and parishioner of Holy Family, McBreen and his wife, Colleen, a nurse, recently celebrated the arrival of a grandchild. Their son, Nicholas, and his wife, Aly, both teachers in the Hamburg area, welcomed a daughter, Arden Jane, in May. McBreen's son Jonathan is an orthopedic trauma physician assistant at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

In a message to the school community, McBreen offered a warm greeting: "It is a pleasure to be your new principal. I am looking forward to working with all of the students and their parents to ensure that a positive learning experience is provided."

"Dr. McBreen brings excellent experience and skills with him, and I am very excited to welcome him to Assumption BVM School. I am looking forward to working with Dr. McBreen to lead our school as we continue to grow. Together we will provide a sound academic and faith-filled Catholic education to our families," said Boyer.

Assumption BVM School is a PreK-8 Catholic school in the Diocese of Allentown, serving families in the Schuylkill County region.
