Leading Up to the Election, Please Pray a Novena to the Holy Spirit

The November 3 election is a time of great national decision for our country. Leading up to that day, the faithful are invited to join in praying a Novena to the Holy Spirit.

A Novena consists of nine consecutive days of prayer. The word comes from “novem,” which is Latin for nine. There are many ways to pray a Novena, including reciting the same prayer each day.

It is traditional to call upon the Holy Spirit during a time of great decision.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 26, and finishing on Election Day, Nov. 3, please recite the following prayer:

Novena To The Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love.

Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.

And you shall renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray. O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant us in the same Spirit to be truly wise and ever to rejoice in His consolation. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray. O Holy Spirit, divine Spirit of light and love, I consecrate to you my understanding, my heart, my will, my whole being for time and for eternity. May my understanding always be submissive to your heavenly inspirations and to the teachings of the Holy Catholic Church, of which you are the infallible Guide; may my heart ever be inflamed with love of God and of my neighbor; may my will always conform to the divine will, and may my whole life be a faithful imitation of the life and virtues of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to whom be honor and glory forever. Amen.

During the Novena period, some parishes may offer a Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit. A Votive Mass is one different from the one prescribed for the day and celebrated for special purpose. Check with your parish for more information.
