A total of 345 units of lifesaving blood has been donated under the Diocesan Blood Drive to the Miller-Keystone Blood Center. We are grateful to all the Parishes who have participated so far.
The top 5 donating Parishes are:
- St. Joseph the Worker, Orefield: 70 units
- St. Thomas More Church, Allentown: 40 units
- St. Catharine of Siena, Reading: 42
- St. John the Baptist, Whitehall: 37 units
- Holy Guardian Angels, Reading: 34
According to Miller-Keystone Blood Center, a unit of blood is approximately 525 mL, which is roughly the equivalent of one pint. The body of an average adult has between 8-12 pints of blood. A newborn baby has about one cup of blood in his/her body.
This initiative will help alleviate the national blood shortage, serving accident, trauma, and burn victims, as well as premature babies and cancer patients. The drive also celebrates St. Januarius, patron saint of blood banks and blood donors. Donors will receive a St. Januarius medallion blessed by Bishop Schlert.
Blood donations tend to drop around Thanksgiving and the Christmas season, so donating blood has even more impact at this time of year.
Let’s keep the momentum going through the initiative’s conclusion on Dec. 16th.
