News on the Cause of Fr. Walter Ciszek

Father Walter J. Ciszek, S.J., was a Jesuit priest born in Shenandoah who spent more than two decades imprisoned in the Soviet Union before returning to the United States in 1963. His writings and witness have inspired many of the faithful for generations.

The Diocese of Allentown has learned that, after years of careful study and discernment, the documentation relating to Fr. Ciszek's Cause does not support advancing his Cause for Beatification or Sainthood.

This development comes as the Church evaluates each Cause with thoroughness, integrity, and fidelity to its norms. While this news may understandably bring disappointment to the many who have been inspired by Father Ciszek's example of heroic faith, it does not diminish the enduring spiritual value of his life, witness, and legacy.

The Diocese is deeply grateful for the many years of prayer, devotion, and support from the faithful. Father Ciszek's courage, perseverance, and unwavering trust in God amidst extraordinary suffering has led many souls to God and will continue to touch countless lives. Even as the formal canonization process has been stopped, the grace flowing from his witness remains alive in the hearts of the faithful.
