“The Story of Father Walter Ciszek” was the topic of a Facebook Live presentation Tuesday (4/28) at 8 p.m.
Bishop Alfred Schlert opened the program with remarks, and Father Eugene Ritz made the presentation.
Father Ciszek, a Jesuit priest and a native of Shenandoah, was held in a Soviet prison for 23 years after being accused of espionage for his missionary work.
He was freed in a prisoner exchange in 1963, died at Fordham University in 1984, and is buried at the Jesuit Center in Wernersville, Berks County.
Father Ritz is co-postulator for the cause for Father Ciszek’s canonization. To be canonized means to be declared a saint by the Pope. As co-postulator, Father Ritz helps guide the cause for canonization through the Church’s canonical process.
The event was sponsored by the Diocese’s Commission for Young Adults. You may watch a replay of the event on the Diocese of Allentown YouTube page.
