Fundamentals of our Faith are the Key, Bishop Tells Students at Ash Wednesday Mass

Focus on the fundamentals to get good at what you do, Bishop Schlert told school students at Ash Wednesday Mass, whether it’s in academics, sports, music, or the Catholic faith.

You can’t do well at sports until you learn the basic skills, the Bishop said. You can’t read and write until you learn the alphabet. You can’t excel at music until you learn the musical scales.

So it is with the Catholic faith.

During Lent, we are called to focus on the fundamentals of our faith: talking to God through prayer, sacrifice through fasting, and doing good for others through almsgiving.

“Think of these things as our spiritual alphabet, or our spiritual musical scales,” he told the large group of students from St. John Vianney Regional School who attended Mass at the Cathedral of St. Catharine of Siena.

When we get good at these things, he said, along with a fourth fundamental – asking God for forgiveness for our sins – then we can go on to develop great spiritual lives.
