Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Roseto has purchased the former Pius X High School and related properties from the Diocese of Allentown.
Father Joseph Kiaieta Kanimea, pastor, announced the purchase to the parish this past weekend.
The announcement traced the rich history of the parish, founded in 1893 to serve the region’s Italian immigrants, and their determination and sacrifice over the years.
The acquisition of the former school building, parking lot, football field, a former convent and a former wrestling room is a great opportunity for the parish to invest in the parish’s future, Father Kanimea said.
The former Pius X High School is across the street from the parish church. Founded in 1951, it was closed in June 2015.
Bishop Alfred Schlert sent a message of encouragement to the parish on the completion of the purchase.
“I am profoundly grateful for the collaborative spirit that Father Kanimea as pastor and the Parish Finance Council has offered in the transaction of this sale,” the Bishop said.
“I am pleased that the former Pius X High School will remain with Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish to continue to advance the mission of the Catholic Church in the Slate Belt Region. I assure you of my prayers.”
